Architecture graduate students and guest artists were presented with an introduction to model prebiotic reactions that spawned the ingredients of life and the analytical tools we use to decipher the chemical inventory on early earth. The talk featured highlights including an overview of the Miller-Urey experiment, the potential role of mineral surfaces in chemical selection/reactivity, and the application of chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify biologically relevant compounds in prebiotic mixtures. Class response was positive! We inspired questions about how life is defined, life's convergent properties in the scheme of chemical evolution, and the future of the CCE as accomplish our mission.
