Nucleoside phosphorylation by the mineral schreibersite

The formation of molecules like DNA and RNA requires the element phosphorus.    However, the few ways of forming these molecules through non-biological means involve multiple steps and artificial phosphorus sources.  We have now demonstrated that meteorites, when warmed under basic conditions with organic molecules, can spontaneously produce phosphorylated biomolecules.  In this respect, extraterrestrial material can provide the material necessary to kick some parts of life into gear.
