Science Cafés and Science Taverns

The Center for Chemical Evolution and the Science Café Movement

The Science Café movement has taken hold in the State of Georgia as a means to bring science discussions and education to the general public. Modeled after a movement in the United Kingdom, Science Café meetings are casual gatherings at coffeehouses or other social spaces where one or more researchers discuss current scientific topics in language accessible to the general public.

Since the establishement of our Center, our members scientists have been actively involved in giving talks and leading discussions at science cafes. Begining with "The Origin of Life, It's Just Chemistry," hosted by the Georgia ACS, the Center for Chemical Evolution has since become a partner with the Atlanta Science Tavern, which holds science cafés on a monthly bases at Manuel's Tavern, on North Avenue, in midtown Atlanta. We are delighted to have played a role in helping this public science program flurish. If you are interested in attending a meeting of the Atlanta Science Tavern, please visit their website. If you are part of an existing Science Café, or starting a new one, and would like one of our member scientists to lead a discussion, contact Mr. Gary Longstreet (gary.longstreet@chemistry.gatech.edu).
